Mississippi Highway Patrol Steps Up DUI Patrols Over Thanksgiving

Last year over the Thanksgiving weekend, state troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol investigated 179 motor vehicle accidents and made 150 DUI arrests. Fifty-six people suffered injuries and three people lost their lives as a result of those crashes.

As we discussed in a recent post, Thanksgiving is known to be a time when drunk driving accidents spike in Mississippi, and that is why the highway patrol is stepping up efforts to stop drunk drivers on the state's highways and interstates. The MHP's Thanksgiving safety campaign, which involves additional patrols and safety checkpoints throughout the state, launches at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and extends through midnight Sunday.

Every drunk driving accident is preventable, and when a DUI accident causes injury or death, the drunk driver needs to be held criminally and civilly accountable.

It is not uncommon for a DUI wreck to cause serious injuries to someone other than the drunk driver. When this happens, the victim has the right to seek civil compensation in addition to the justice handed down in criminal court.

In fact, police investigations often strengthen DUI accident victims' claims of personal injury and wrongful death. Under Mississippi law, a person injured by a drunk driver may also have legal grounds to seek punitive damages against the wrongdoer.

Punitive damages can significantly increase the amount of compensation received by an accident victim or accident victim's family.

The evidence used in DUI accident claims is time-sensitive, and anyone who has been injured by a drunk driver should contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible.

If you or a loved one has been hurt by a drunk driver, then you can still count on the insurance company -- yours or the other driver's -- to take swift action to minimize the value of your legal claim. In some cases, the insurance company will even try to shift blame from the drunk driver onto the victim.

Don't be a victim twice by having your claim rejected by the insurance company. Let a dedicated personal injury lawyer investigate your case with a view toward maximizing your compensation.

With that said, the law office of B. Geoffrey Harrison PA would like to wish everyone along the Gulf Coast a happy, safe and peaceful Thanksgiving.
